Beneath the Surface

Jul 13, 2023 | How to Fest, Readers

Last year we launched the Beneath the Surface series to give our audience and authors the opportunity to take a deeper dive into the topics that are important to all of us. This year we continue this exploration with events that address the opioid crisis, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit People, and the environmental implications of resource extraction in or near Indigenous communities.

We have three exciting events that shine a spotlight on these topics:

#12 THE RING OF FIRE
Virginia Heffernan explores the mining of minerals critical to the green energy revolution and conflict among resource development, environmental stewardship, and Indigenous rights.

#17 ON THE RAVINE
Vincent Lam offers an intimate portrait of the impact of the opioid crisis on those struggling with addiction, and those struggling to treat them.

#24 HOPE AND JUSTICE
h
Angela Sterritt investigates the lives of MMIWG2S, demanding accountability, exposing racism, and showing that there is much work to do on the path towards understanding the truth.
